Thomas Callanan
Stained Glass Craftsman
Thomas M. Callanan of Levittown, PA died on Friday August 31, 2018 at his home. He was 91.
Callanan was a gifted stained glass craftsman. Following his father into the craft, Thomas
apprenticed at the renowned Willet Stained Glass Studio. He later opened his own studio,
Oxford Stained Glass. He operated the studio for thirty years until his son, Timothy, took over
changing the name to Callanan Stained Glass. The studio created luminous windows for
churches and institutions throughout the region: among them Augustus Lutheran Church,
Trappe, PA; Girard College, and the Basilica Cathedral of Sts. Peter & Paul.
Thomas was born November 11, 1926 in Philadelphia to Timothy Callanan, and Josephine
O'Meara, both Irish immigrants. Thomas was steeped in Irish music and culture throughout his life. For many years, he marched proudly with the Mayo Society in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
He played his button accordion at every opportunity and was the highlight of family gatherings. Thomas especially enjoyed his grandchildren, teaching them Irish songs and how to play the tin whistle.
