We were the Liddies' neighbors for 7 years. Uncle Alex was the gentle, kind giant with the "bonies" for all of my canine roommates--Foster, Jack, Stella and Ralph.
My last email exchange with Uncle Alex was in December when we discussed the irreverent xmas cards I sent. Per Uncle Alex, "of course we loved your Trump and atheist cards! We are fully sympatico!"
We were fortunate to have had Uncle Alex in our lives.
To Patricia and all the Liddies, I'm sorry for your loss.
xoxoxo,
Stella, Ralph and Pat

I was Alex's colleague in the English department at TCNJ for 34 years. He was a leader in the department, contributing through his work as chairman and his brilliance in the classroom to making it into the great organization it is today. Alex and Patricia were also dear personal friends. In retirement, it was my pleasure to call him every month or so from our home in Florida. He was always the same cheerful Alex as we reminisced and talked about books and current events. My wife, Kathy, had Alex for freshman writing, the classic "L&C" course. I got a laugh out of him recently when I said he had frightened Kathy, and others in the class, because of his passionate views about the Vietnam War. His handling of the class woke her up, along with countless other students, to the complexities of political discourse and the need to examine our assumptions. Alex held the department together in amity, and he continued to keep us in touch after retirement by organizing the famous Geezer luncheons. I'm not the only one who misses him like hell right now.

My condolences to the Liddie family. I had Dr. Liddie for undergraduate courses at what was then Trenton State College in the early 1980s. One was a survey course of the American novel in the 20th century and another was a seminar on George Orwell. His love for books -- even in the way he held them in his hands when teaching! -- and his care in reading them closely were tremendously influential for me. In fact, I fell in love with literature so much I continued my education in the master's program in English at Villanova.
I later became a local newspaper columnist with conservative views. I remember Dr. Liddie and I had a few friendly exchanges via email. I was so grateful he read what I wrote even though we disagreed on substance.
An excellent teacher and a good man. I recall him with fondness and respect.
