Obituary of John A. Orekar

Obituary of John A. Orekar 1942-2023 John A. Orekar, 80, of Washington Crossing, PA passed peacefully on March 7, 2023, at Chandler Hall Nursing Home. Born and raised in Detroit, MI, John graduated from Redford High School and Michigan State University. While students at MSU, he met and married the love of his life, his wife, Nan Stewart. After graduation in 1966, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, graduating from officers training, then pilot training, with honors. While stationed at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX, he quickly rose to the rank of Captain in two and a half short years. A skillful, distinguished pilot and excellent instructor, John trained countless young officers to fly fighter jets. He served in the military from 1967 to 1977. In civilian life, John chose a career in engineering sales of specialty metals for Ampco-Pittsburgh. Possessing an entrepreneurial nature, he ultimately started his own sales representation business, working with bronze alloy foundries in both the U.S. and the UK. He especially enjoyed his work with companies building nuclear-powered ships for the U.S. Navy in Groton, CT and Newport News, VA. John had a big personality with a hearty laugh, quick wit, and keen intellect, often holding court with family and friends alike. We fondly recall the stories of his youth, his motorcycling days, even driving with his grandparents in the family car from Michigan to Colorado when he was just 15 years old! With his and Nan's adventuresome spirit, and their curiosity, they traveled widely throughout Canada, U.S.A., and Europe. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Michigan State athletics. John will always be remembered for his patriotism, unfailing optimism, generosity and kindness, especially to those that needed a warm smile, a wave, or a pat on the back. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lillian Orekar. He will be sorely missed by his survivors. His loving wife, Nan, of 57 years, daughter, Erin Orekar, son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Maja Orekar, and two grandchildren, Cecilia and Theodore, who lovingly refer to John as "Poppy". We would like to thank the wonderful nurses and caregivers at Chandler Hall Friends/Nursing and Chandler Hall Hospice for such excellent care of John. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 12:00pm at the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home 17 S. Delaware Ave. Yardley, PA 19067. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Interment will be held at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery immediately following the services.
