Jerry was a mentor, colleague, and friend. He loved research and science, but he was skeptical that anyone had the secret to it all. He was more often right than not, but he had no problem admitting limitations. I carpooled with him and served together on many committees, now feeling privileged to have done so.

Jerry and I were carpool mates in our short commute from Yardley to the Agricultural Research Center of Cyanamid in Princeton. Jerry also was on a natural products committee I chaired. We shared lots of conversation. I enjoyed his dry humor as well as his nose for discovery research. He told me once that discovery research is a managed form of anarchy. His instinct was that it is a mistake to think real innovation can be manufactured. My favorite quote from him is, "It's not progress that counts. It is the appearance of progress!" He tolerated my inexperience well; I wish I had listened more. I am a better person for knowing him.
