Estelle Therese Austin, beloved matriarch and pillar of our family, peacefully passed away on January 21, 2024. She was surrounded by the love of her family and the kind and caring staff at Chandler Hall. Estelle leaves behind a legacy of memories, wisdom, and unconditional love. 


Estelle was born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 30th, 1928.  Daughter of the late Thomas and Estelle Mulcahy, she grew up in a large, loving family with a total of ten siblings.  Estelle was a graduate of Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn, NY.  On April 30th, 1949, Estelle married her great love, Harland Austin. They lived many years in Bethpage, NY, where they raised their four children, before retiring to Newtown, PA in 1986.


After raising her family, Estelle worked as a Claims Examiner on Long Island, and later, at the NJ Department of Agriculture.  After her retirement, she volunteered for many causes about which she felt passionate - some examples included VITA literacy, Meals on Wheels, Democratic campaigns, and the NICU at Capital Health.  Estelle continued her community involvement at Chandler Hall, where she was president of the resident council for many years.  


Throughout her life, Estelle embraced the roles of daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and neighbor with devotion. She was a source of unwavering support, offering kindness and comfort, often sharing stories from her 95 rich years lived.  Family was the cornerstone of Estelle's life. 


Estelle is survived by her daughters, Nancy Goodwin and Jane Austin (husband John Ahmad), son Kenneth Austin (wife Susan), daughters-in-law Sandra Carter and Trudy Austin, brother James Mulcahy, cousins Rev. Msrg. Robert Harris and Marilyn Harris, grandchildren Maggie Powley (Adan), Derrick Schlitter, Ryan Austin (Nam) Lindsey Kidwell (David), Kimberly Austin (Philip Fitch), and Emily Ahmad. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Adelaide, William, Declan, Brenn, Andy, Coy, Quinn, soon-to-be, baby Nora, as well as many nieces and nephews.


Estelle is preceded in death by her beloved husband Harland Austin, son Harland Daniel Austin and son- in-law Robert Goodwin, brothers Edward and William Fitzsimmons, Joseph, Thomas, Daniel and John Mulcahy, sisters Mary DeMattia and Francis King. 


Visitation will take place on Sunday, January28th, 2024, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at FitzGerald -Sommer Funeral Home, 17 S. Delaware Avenue, Yardley, PA.  At 7:30pm, guests are encouraged to share stories and memories of Estelle as we celebrate her life.


The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 29th, 2024, at 10:00am at The Olde Church of St. Andrew, 135 S. Sycamore Street. Newtown PA.  Interment will take place in the parish cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Chandler Hall, Friends Nursing Activity Fund, in memory of Estelle Austin, 99 Barclay Street Newtown, 18940.
